Steps to Becoming a STEM Teacher

The Florida Teachers of Tomorrow program is approved by the state of Florida to certify educators in many STEM subjects. All you need is a four-year bachelor’s degree, with a GPA of 2.5 or higher to get started. Once we’ve received your completed application, we will require a copy of your official transcripts, and an approved Statement of Eligibility from the FDOE (Florida Department of Education) to be admitted to our program.

Step 1: Training

Upon admission you will begin our comprehensive online training program. At Florida Teachers of Tomorrow our detailed curriculum will help you develop the skills and provide you with the knowledge you need to be prepared for the classroom. Throughout your coursework, field experience, and your internship, Florida Teachers will offer ongoing support and assistance.

Step 2: Testing

Potential teachers seeking their certification in Florida must pass the FTCE (Florida Teacher Certification Exams).  To become a STEM teacher you will need to pass one of the exams listed below, and the General Knowledge Test. During your first year teaching, you will also pass the Professional Education (PEd) Test.

If you are planning to teach at the middle school level you must pass the Subject Area Exam offered by Florida Teachers in one of two subject areas:

  1. Middle Grades General Science
  2. Middle Grades Mathematics

STEM teachers at the secondary level must pass the Subject Area Exam in one of the following areas:

  1. Mathematics
  2. Biology
  3. Chemistry
  4. Physics
  5. Engineering & Technology Education

Step 3: Teaching

From the moment you begin teaching, you will earn full pay and benefits. Florida Teachers will assign you a Field Supervisor, who will support you throughout the internship. Upon completion of your internship and all program requirements, you will receive your Professional Certificate and become a fully certified teacher in the state of Florida.
