A great question and one we get often.\u00a0 We had experts from around the country answer that question\u00a0at our\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.teachersoftomorrow.org\/blog\/insights\/should-i-be-a-teacher\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Teachers of Tomorrow<\/a>\u00a0blog. But what about North Carolina.<\/p>\n<p>Since we have a teacher of the year who came through our program, we realized that their voices are pretty spot on when it comes to teaching.<\/p>\n<p>North Carolina Teacher of the Year, Freebird McKinney, has some great thoughts on teaching and why he is so successful.<\/p>\n<p>A self-described \u201cvillage teacher,\u201d McKinney also sees his role as an educator reaching beyond the classroom, leading international service-learning adventures, working also as an adjunct professor at Elon University and serving as a community leader.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI try to emulate to my students and to community members what an engaged citizen looks like,\u201d McKinney said in his Teacher of the Year nomination submission.<\/p>\n<p>His principal stated &#8211; &#8220;He\u00a0always stay longer than his schedule permits because it is tough to leave. \u2026 His students are not passive participants. They are actively engaged.
