As the state breaks the 5 million mark for student enrollment in Texas public schools a new burden is being placed on districts – hiring enough teachers.

For years, Texas has accounted for a full 25% of the entire US population growth. The rapid growth combined with the surging state economy has resulted in a teacher shortage not seen in a long time.

Districts are hustling to fill the tens of thousands of vacancies across the state needed for next school year. The demand and competition between districts has pushed starting teacher salaries to record highs, breaking $50,000 in numerous districts across Texas.

Stephanie Blackwell, a recruiter for Texas Teachers “ who spends much of her time on the road commented, “I’ve never seen so much activity at the job fairs around the state, districts are snapping up our candidates and asking for more.”

While Texas Teachers is the largest certification prog ram in the state with thousands of applicants in all subject areas, this year will rapidly deplete that applicant pool.

Our Advisors talk to hundreds of people a day and so many of them are telling us they already have interviews and offers for jobs next semester.”

“It honestly has never been a better time to get hired”, says Patty Koebke, Director of Customer Relations at Texas Teachers. “Our Advisors talk to hundreds of people a day and so many of them are telling us they already have interviews and offers for jobs next semester. We receive over 700 applications a week and from what I can tell, that’s not nearly enough.”

The hiring season, which traditionally begins in early summer, is now beginning as early as March. By all accounts, teacher hiring by districts this year will be earlier, longer and more aggressive than ever before.
