These sections encompass the five different subjects English Language Arts and Reading (901), Mathematics (902), Social Studies (903), Science (904), and Fine Arts, Health and Physical Education. The TExES measures the candidate’s knowledge compared to a set of criteria, rather than comparing this knowledge against the performance of other candidates. When looking to take the TExES 391 exam, there are a variety of dates to choose from. The TExES 391 also gives teachers the ability to teach from early childhood all the way up to grade 6 in Texas public schools.

Difference between TExES 291 and 391

So, what is the difference between TExES 291 and 391? TExES 291 was replaced with TExES 391 on January 1, 2022. The two exams are separate, and as such, their passing scores cannot be combined. This means that passing scores on subject exams of one exam cannot be combined with passing scores on subject exams of the other exam. If an individual has been trying to pass all sections of the 291 exam, but they were unable to do so by January 1, 2022, they will have to start over with TExES 391. The 391 exam contains less questions than the 291, and the amount of time needed to complete the various sections of the exam also differs.

The Passing Score for the TExES 391

The passing score for the TExES 391 exam is a score of 240. Scores range on a scale from 100 to 300. If an individual scores less than 240 and fails to pass the TExES 391 exam, they have four more attempts to pass it.
