Study Strategy
The materials I used to study for this test were the state preparation manual and the Mometrix Speech Flash Cards (which ran about $50). Honestly, there are not a whole lot of companies that offer a study guide for this test besides Mometrix. It was either the Secret Study Guide book or the flashcards. The flashcards came in and it had about 500 different cards of definitions. I ended up sorting the cards into differents categories such as Mass Media, Speech and Debate. This made it easier so that I could study each category at a time. There are some cards I didn't use because they were very common sense definitions that I didn't need. I would say the cards were helpful. I majored in Communications, so I came in knowing the content pretty well. However, a good chunk of what was on the cards were on the test. I highly suggest sorting the cards into the appropriate categories.
Testing Strategy
The test was challenging, but I passed on my first try. A study strategy I recommend is to go on the state manual and look through all the competencies that will be on the test. I did this and wrote down all the terms I did not know well and knew I needed to study. Debate was my weakness so I made sure to go over those terms, which the flashcards included. I also would recommend buying a study guide as well. The test had a good portion of Mass Communication and Media questions, so don't expect it to be all Speech terms. This test was not as situational as I thought it would be, like the English content test is, so it is more of knowing the actual terms and not "what is the best choice" questions. Lastly, go over the practice questions in the state manual before the test. The flash card set also came with 100 free practice questions that you can access online. Good Luck!
