The Responsibilities of an English Teacher

The responsibilities of an English teacher vary greatly depending on the age of their students. In general they usually include the following:

  2. Guiding students towards curriculum goals and objectives
  3. Preparing students for state and national English exams
  4. Reviewing students’ progress through regular homework and tests
  5. Communicating with students, parents, counselors and principals about students’ progress

Steps to Becoming an English Teacher

The Florida Teachers of Tomorrow program is approved by the state of Florida to certify educators in the subject of English. All you need is a four-year bachelor’s degree, with a GPA of 2.5 or higher to get started. Once we’ve received your completed application, we will require a copy of your official transcripts, and an approved Statement of Eligibility from the FDOE (Florida Department of Education) to be admitted to our program.

Step 1: Training

Upon admission you will begin our comprehensive online training program. At Florida Teachers of Tomorrow our detailed curriculum will help you develop the skills and provide you with the knowledge you need to be prepared for the classroom. Throughout your coursework, field experience, and your internship year, Florida Teachers will offer ongoing support and assistance.

Step 2: Testing

Potential teachers seeking their certification in Florida must pass the FTCE (Florida Teacher Certification Exams).  To become an English teacher in Florida, you must pass the Subject Area Exam for your grade level as outlined below, and the General Knowledge Test. During your first year teaching, you will also pass the Professional Education (PEd) Test. If you’re planning to teach at the middle level, you must pass the Middle Grades English (5-9) Subject Area Exam. If you are planning to teach at the secondary level, you must pass the English (6-12) Subject Area Exam.

Step 3: Teaching

From the moment you begin teaching, you will earn full pay and benefits. Florida Teachers will assign you a Field Supervisor, who will support you throughout your internship.
