South Carolina Teachers of Tomorow Candidates

On May 8, the South Carolina Department of Education (SCDE) provided guidance for perspective candidates allowing for flexibility, due to test center closures as a result of COVID-19.

To support candidates affected by closed testing centers, the SCDE will issue a Temporary Alternative Route certificate for the 2020-21 school year to eligible candidates. The objective of the Temporary certification is to afford individuals who has successfully completed all requirements the opportunity to obtain a one-year, non-renewable certificate through an approved alternative route preparation program, like South Carolina Teachers. One or more certification assessments required by the State Board of Education will temporarily be excused.

Temporary Alternative Route Certificate Requirements

To be issued the Temporary Alternative Route certificate for the 2020-21 school year by the SCDE, an eligible candidate must have the following documentation on file:

  • application for certification,
  • application fee,
  • official transcripts documenting qualifying degree and major from a regionally accredited college or university,
  • fingerprint-based criminal history clearance,
  • verification of successful completion of the pre-service training of the specific program, and
  • confirmation of employment in a public school district.

The Temporary Alternative Route certificate is valid only for the 2020-21 school year and is not renewable. By or before June 30, 2021, the candidate who has been issued a Temporary certificate must have passed the previously waived assessment. An eligible score for the corresponding required subject area assessment must be on file with the SCDE in order to advance in the program and remain eligible for certification.

A candidate’s conditional eligibility status for the Temporary Alternative Route certificate for the 2021-22 school year depends on whether they meet the testing requirement, demonstrate successful progress in the specific preparation program (South Carolina Teachers), and continue working as the teacher of record in a public South Carolina school district.

Restrictions

Candidates who have not successfully passed a subject area assessment after three attempts are not eligible to receive the Temporary Alternative Route certificate.

*Please note that a standard customary Alternative Route certificate will still be issued to candidates who have all documentation on file and a qualifying score on the required subject area assessment(s).
