Who Is Required to Take the STR?

As of January 1, 2021, you will be required to take the Science of Teaching Reading (STR) exam, if you are seeking certification in one or multiple of the following subject areas:

  • Core Subjects 4-8
  • Core Subjects EC-6
  • English Language Arts and Reading 4-8
  • English Language Arts and Reading/Social Studies 4-8

 

When Does This New Requirement Start?

This new requirement applies to any candidate who has not been issued their Standard Certificate by or before December 31, 2020. As of January 1, 2021, all candidates pursuing certification in one of the four prescribed subject areas will be required to take the Science of Teaching Reading (STR) exam.

The purpose of the STR exam is to help address four major areas which lend room to improvement, based on various state findings:

  1. Support for Literacy
  2. Science Behind Teaching Reading
  3. Science of Teaching Reading Exam
  4. Reading Standards for K-3

You will need to take the STR exam, but when you take it depends on when your Intern Certificate is issued. If your Intern Certificate is issued by or before December 30, 2020, you may take the STR during your Intern Year. If your Intern Certificate is not issued by or before December 30, 2020, you are required to pass the STR exam prior to being recommended for your Intern Certificate.

You will be required to take the STR exam because your Standard Certificate cannot be issued prior to December 30, 2020.

You are not required to take the STR.

You will need to pass your PPR exam and complete all remaining requirements in order to be issued your Standard Certificate before December 30, 2020. If your Standard Certificate is issued on or before December 30, 2020, you will not be required to take the STR exam.

Common STR Questions from Candidates

 

General Questions

If you are pursuing your certification in (1) Core Subjects 4-8, (2) Core Subjects EC-6, (3) English Language Arts and Reading 4-8, or (4) English Language Arts and Reading/Social Studies 4-8, then yes – you will need to pass the STR exam if your Standard Certificate is not issued by December 30, 2020.

Registration for the STR Exam is open now, with testing dates available starting January 2021.

The STR Exam is administered through Pearson. Once you receive approval from Texas Teachers, you can register for the exam here.

Enrolled Candidates

If your certificate expires before February 26, 2021, and your Standard Certificate is issued on or before December 30, 2020, you will not be required to take the STR exam.
