It’s your dream to become a teacher. It’s our dream to make that happen. We strive to let nothing stand your way, which is why we’ve streamlined the path to becoming a fully licensed teacher in North Carolina. Can you picture yourself a year from now? We can. Follow this program, and you could be teaching in a classroom. Learn how by following this simple step-by-step guide:
Step 1. Apply
The first step can be completed before you finish reading this “How-To” guide. Take one minute of your time and apply. It’s easy and free. The program requirements are simple – you’ll need a 4-year bachelor’s degree and a GPA of 2.7.
Our dedicated team is here to help you throughout the process. After submitting your online application, followed by your transcripts, one of our experienced Program Advisors will reach out to you. Together, you’ll work on creating a strategy – made just for you – to help you earn your teaching license. Your Program Advisor will serve as a valuable asset in helping you select which subject area best highlights your natural skills and abilities as a future teacher.
Step 2. Test & Train
Once you’re officially enrolled in the program, your teacher training is underway. After your Program Advisor helps you determine which licensure area you’d like to pursue, it’s time to pass your North Carolina state tests. Now, let’s get to the substance (a.k.a. – the exciting part) of your teacher preparation. As soon as you’re admitted into the program, you have instant access to your Classroom Readiness training modules. Our flexible learning modules are 100% online and available to you 24/7. You have the freedom to set your own schedule and learn on your own time. Developed by leading educators, we aim to provide you with nothing short of the best. As you dive into more than 100 hours of Classroom Readiness training, you’ll lay the groundwork needed to become a successful teacher. From digital classroom tools to student engagement and everything in between, you’ll soon be ready to step foot inside the classroom.
Step. 3 Teach
You’ve mastered your content area test(s) and Classroom Readiness Training – congrats! Shake off those butterflies and prepare to teach. You’ve invested a lot to get to this point and you’re ready. It’s time to secure your first-year teaching position on a Residency License. During your first year, you’ll work as a full-time teacher, earning full pay and benefits (it’s the real deal).
For any questions along the way, we’ve got your back. You’ll be paired with a Field Supervisor to help guide you. Take advantage of having a skilled educator to offer support and advice; they’re there to help! While you teach your first two full academic semesters in a North Carolina classroom, you’ll also finish your Excellence in Teaching and Learning training modules. You’re so close!
Step 4. Earn Your License!
An entire year of teaching in a classroom is a huge accomplishment. Remember, slow and steady wins the race. If necessary, you’ll also have an additional year to complete your portfolio-based assessment. We’ll walk you through what this is during the program.
Next, pending the recommendation of your Principal and Field Supervisor, it’s time to upgrade your teacher status. This is the proud moment where North Carolina Teachers of Tomorrow provides you with a letter of completion along with a transcript of your completed coursework.
The rest is up to you. With these documents, you may now apply for your North Carolina Initial Professional Educator’s License. Once you have it, get out there and teach for a better tomorrow!
A lot can happen in a year. Are you ready to change your future for the better?
