I used the Mometrix Test Prep Secrets Study Guide Book, as well as the Quizlet Practice Test and the Test Preparation Manual from the Pearson Website. The Mometrix Book wasn't really that helpful. I wish I would've studied more from the Test Manual. I will try to purchase the flashcards for my next attempt.

Testing Strategy

The test was a lot harder than I expected, I spent about three weeks studying and I really felt I had this test down pack. Surprisingly I did fairly well on the Speaking and Listening in Different Context and Speech Education portions of the exam. After getting my results I see I struggled the most in the Communication Processes of the Exam. I will try to reattempt this exam soon, hopefully I can pass this time. My final score was a 216/240

The materials I used to study for this test were the state preparation manual and the Mometrix Speech Flash Cards (which ran about $50). Honestly, there are not a whole lot of companies that offer a study guide for this test besides Mometrix. It was either the Secret Study Guide book or the flashcards. The flashcards came in and it had about 500 different cards of definitions. I ended up sorting the cards into differents categories such as Mass Media, Speech and Debate. This made it easier so that I could study each category at a time. There are some cards I didn't use because they were very common sense definitions that I didn't need. I would say the cards were helpful. I majored in Communications, so I came in knowing the content pretty well. However, a good chunk of what was on the cards were on the test. I highly suggest sorting the cards into the appropriate categories.

Testing Strategy

The test was challenging, but I passed on my first try. A study strategy I recommend is to go on the state manual and look through all the competencies that will be on the test. I did this and wrote down all the terms I did not know well and knew I needed to study. Debate was my weakness so I made sure to go over those terms, which the flashcards included. I also would recommend buying a study guide as well. The test had a good portion of Mass Communication and Media questions, so don't expect it to be all Speech terms. This test was not as situational as I thought it would be, like the English content test is, so it is more of knowing the actual terms and not "what is the best choice" questions. Lastly, go over the practice questions in the state manual before the test. The flash card set also came with 100 free practice questions that you can access online. Good Luck!

I used the State Preparation Manual (which is free), and I bought the Secrets Study Guide. Honestly, the Secrets study guide was okay. I give it a 3/5 stars, but I feel that it could have been a lot better. It had a few typos, which made me questioned its credibility. Also, the test had some concepts that were not covered in the book. The only reason I did good on the test was because I have a minor in communications, so I knew a lot of the concepts already. The only other study material option was the TExES Exam Prep, but I did not want to get it because it was online, and I did not want to do another thing online. However, if I had to do it again, I would probably get the TExES Exam Prep. I studied for exactly 1 month. It took me about 3 weeks to go through the whole book and take notes. The week before the test, I made flashcards and reviewed the notes.

Testing Strategy

I took the practice test in the state manual, and some of the questions seem common sense, but they want you to answer them in a specific way, which makes it tricky. The actual exam is basically the same way. Over all, the test was not as bad as I thought it was going to be. There were a few questions I had absolutely no idea how to answer, but I did my best. My best advice is just to cover all the material and study the material exactly as they want you to know it. I did exactly this and I got a 277/300 (passing score is 240). Good luck!

I purchased the Mometrix 129 Speech 7-12 Study Guide Secrets. I also printed out all of the TExES 129 Speech 7-12 Quizlet.com pages. I read the entire Mometrix Study Guide and the entire Quizlet.com pages. I also read through the Speech 7-12 Test at-a-glance and the TExES 129 Preparation manual. I also took three communication course in college which were Public Speaking, Interpersonal Communications & Business and Professional Speaking. I looked through all my books and notes from the Communication Courses that I have taken several years back. I wanted to purchase more Texes 129 Speech 7-12 Study Guides but their aren't any; only Mometrix which did not prepare me properly for this certification exam.

Testing Strategy

The TExES 129 Consisted of 100 questions which only 80 counted. The breakdown of the test was as follows: Communication Processes 25/18, Speaking and Listening in Different Contexts 30/12, Speech Education 25/16. I did not pass the first time. I will have to take it again in the future, but I know now that I need to focus on Speaking and Listening in Different Contexts.

I was really shocked that the test was not what I expected. It had a lot of media related questions (producers, ratings, etc). I would suggest studying communications and speech as two different entities. I studied for about three weeks and passed. Definitely go over the domains, but don't get caught up in one domain, use them as a reference.

Testing Strategy

A very long test. I took my time and after every 25 questions I took a two minute break. It was harder than I imagined so take your time. Good luck.
