Study Strategy

I used an old text book called 'Technology Today And Tomorrow, Student Edition 2004' to study. This is all I used to study before I took the test, and I passed! I read that book 3 times, made mind maps, took notes and highlighted certain areas. I did not need not study any differently. You can find that book on Amazon and it's very cheap. It helped me pass the test.

The first half of the test wasn't so bad but the second half I really struggled with. It included: different types of bridges, tools to make rounded corners on a counter top, cargo transportation on ships and trains, different types of engines, different types of trucks that carry cargo and types of communication. This was all in the book I listed above. Know everything in that book, that book saved me! I made equivalent of an 85 on the exam.

Since I have taught for 21 years, mostly in middle school science, I felt that I had a significant base of knowledge that might apply to this test. Additionally, I was a general contractor for a few years and have always had an interest in construction. I also have a M.Ed in Educational Technology Leadership. I felt that there would be gaps in my knowledge so I bought the Mometrix study guide. First I took the practice test and got 76% correct. This did help me understand the nature of the content on the test but the study guide section was not very helpful.

Testing Strategy

First of all, the content of this test is broad! Some of the questions covered very specific terminology. I either knew the content or I didn't. Luckily in the second case, I could narrow the answer choices by two. I finished the test thinking I might have passed it. My lowest subcategory score was 85%. My highest was 100%. My average was 90%. I would look for something other than the Mometrix study guide. I feel that I passed based on my own knowledge NOT on what I studied in that guide.

When preparing for the test, I purchased the Mometrix study guide. I read it front to back and took the practice test inside, twice. I also used the Engineering and Technology textbook portal setup by McGraw-Hill. This was probably the most valuable resource for me (link below.) Lastly, I purchased 4 practice tests from TExES Prep online (link below.) This was a very valuable resource for understanding what the test would look like and how it would be scored. Testing Strategy

This test is a completely computerized and multiple choice exam. I found it much more difficult than I had originally anticipated. The questions were sometimes subjective, and often had answer choices that were all extremely similar to one another. You have to be able to eliminate answer choices and deduce which option best suits the career field the question covers (Construction, Telecommunications, Engineering, etc.) I ended up scoring a 266, passing the test on my first attempt. If you follow the links and tips provided above, you should be fine. I would caution that this is not the kind of test you can get away with skimming study material 1 or 2 days before. Be prepared!
