District Reopening Plans

red line

School start dates are right around the corner. How we return to school is at the pinnacle of all Texas school districts and decision-makers’ conversations. At the forefront of each district’s plan is how to return to schools safely while balancing the needs of students to ensure effective learning.

What Districts Are Discussing

As districts make the challenging decision to choose which reopening plan they will use, here are some frequent topics that are being discussed and taken into consideration:

  • Safety: How best to ensure that all students and staff are protected.
  • Limiting Exposure: How to maintain six feet of distance in the classroom, busses, hallways, etc.
  • Seating Arrangements: How to arrange classrooms (and supplies) so each student has six feet.
  • Minimizing Congestion: How to create a building flow, so students and staff move in the same direction through hallways.
  • Buses: How to plan and arrange for socially distanced transportation.

Three Reopening Models

Various Texas school districts have chosen from the following three models:

  1. Remote learning only: Students will not have the option to return for school for in-person learning. Instead, they will partake in virtual learning from home.
  2. Full in-person reopening available for all students: Students have the option to attend school in-person but are not necessarily required to do so.
  3. Hybrid/Partial: Districts will use both remote learning and in-person instruction.
