Dr. Francisco Rivera Mieles

Dr. Francisco Rivera Mieles has maintained a life-long passion for education.  He was born and raised in Puerto Rico, moving to Florida 18 years ago.

Having experienced an educational transition (K-12 Education in Puerto Rico and Post-Secondary Education in Florida) gave Dr. Rivera insight into one of our fastest-growing populations, English Language Learners (ELLs).

As an educator, Francisco saw first-hand the hardships these students go through every day, as they sit in our classrooms sometimes silent, and most of the time confused.  That is why it is imperative that teachers understand this segment of our student population, and study best practices grounded in research to help them.

It is such an important topic for Dr. Rivera that he made it the subject of his dissertation at the University of Central Florida.

In the end, as President Lyndon B. Johnson said, “education is the only valid passport from poverty,” and he wishes to ensure ELLs gain equal access to education to improve their future.
