Education & Career Guidance

Is teaching a good career in 2025?

Yes—teaching is still one of the most meaningful careers you can choose in 2025. Schools across the U.S. need passionate, qualified educators, especially with teacher shortages in key subject areas. Beyond job stability, teaching gives you the chance to directly impact students’ lives and contribute to your community every single day. It’s not always easy, but it’s rewarding in ways few careers can match.

Why should I make a career change to teaching?

If you’re looking for more purpose and want to directly impact people’s lives, teaching is one of the best career changes you can make. Many career changers bring valuable real-world skills into the classroom—whether it’s communication, leadership, problem-solving, or industry knowledge. You won’t just be teaching content—you’ll be shaping lives.

How do I know if teaching is the right career for me?

Ask yourself:

  • Do I enjoy helping others learn and grow?
  • Am I energized by working with kids, teens, or adults in a classroom setting?
  • Do I value purpose and impact as much as (or more than) just a paycheck?
  • Am I resilient and willing to face challenges with creativity?

If you said “yes” to most of these, teaching might be a great fit. Many career changers find that their prior skills translate well into the classroom.

What qualities make someone a good teacher?

Great teachers share a mix of qualities:

  • Patience and empathy – understanding that every student learns differently.
  • Strong communication – explaining ideas clearly and listening actively.
  • Adaptability – being flexible when plans or students’ needs change.
  • Commitment to growth – continually improving their craft and embracing feedback.
  • Passion for helping others – genuinely wanting to make a difference.

If you have these traits—or are willing to grow into them—you’re already on the right track.

What types of teachers are most in demand right now?

Nationwide, schools are especially looking for teachers in: STEM subjects (math, science, technology), Special education, English as a Second Language (ESL/ELL), Early childhood education, Bilingual teachers. If you’re flexible in subject or location, you’ll find even more opportunities.

Do I need a teaching degree to start teaching?

No, you don’t need an education degree to begin teaching, you just need a bachelor’s degree in any field. Alternative certification programs allow you to earn your teaching credentials while already working in the classroom. This is how thousands of career changers become teachers every year.

What are the biggest challenges new teachers face today?

Some of the common hurdles include:

  • Classroom management and balancing different learning needs.
  • Adapting to new curriculum and technology.
  • Navigating paperwork and state certification requirements.
  • Work-life balance—teaching can be all-consuming at first.

The good news is; you’re not alone. With Teachers of Tomorrow we offer expert advisor support, mentorship programs, test preparation, certification support and professional development opportunities to help new teachers succeed.

General Certification

How long does it really take to become a teacher?

The timeline really depends on your state and the pathway you choose. A traditional bachelor’s in education typically takes about 4 years. However, alternative certification programs (like Teachers of Tomorrow) can get you into the classroom much faster—sometimes in as little as 4–6 weeks once you’ve met the initial requirements. From there, your pace is determined by how quickly you complete coursework, testing, and required training hours. Once you’re hired, you’ll teach full-time with pay and benefits while finishing your certification program, which usually takes 1–2 years.

Do I need a teaching degree to start teaching?

No, you don’t need an education degree to begin teaching, you just need a bachelor’s degree in any field. Alternative certification programs allow you to earn your teaching credentials while already working in the classroom. This is how thousands of career changers become teachers every year.

What exactly is an alternative certification program?

An alternative certification program is a state-approved pathway that allows people with a bachelor’s degree (in any field) to become certified teachers without going back to college for a 4-year education degree. These programs combine training, coursework, and testing with real classroom teaching so you can start your teaching career faster.

How does alternative certification compare to traditional teacher prep?

The traditional route usually means completing a bachelor’s in education over 4 years (or a master’s program if you already have a degree). Alternative certification, on the other hand, is designed for career changers and college grads who want to start teaching right away. You begin with pre-service training, get hired into a classroom with full pay and benefits, and then complete your certification requirements while you teach. It’s faster, more flexible, and often more affordable than traditional programs.

How does alternative certification help solve the teacher shortage?

Alternative certification opens the door for thousands of people with degrees in other fields to step into teachingwithout requiring them to spend years earning another degree. This faster, more flexible pathway helps schools fill vacancies in critical areas like math, science, special education, and bilingual education. At the same time, it brings in passionate professionals with diverse skills and backgrounds that enrich classrooms.

Will districts hire me if I go through alt cert?

Yes, alt cert is a very common way to get into teaching. School districts across the country actively hire from alternative certification programs because they need qualified teachers, especially in high-demand subjects. Alt cert is a well-established pathway recognized by state education agencies. In fact, many districts partner directly with programs like Teachers of Tomorrow to fill their vacancies.

What is field-based experience / student teaching like in an alt cert program?

In alternative certification, field-based experiences (FBEs) are designed to give you hands-on exposure to teaching before you take on your own classroom. FBEs can be completed through classroom observations, tutoring, working with small groups of students, or even approved online activities that let you see real teaching in action. These hours help you connect theory to practice and prepare you for managing your own classroom.

What kind of support do alt cert programs provide (mentors, supervisors, job help)?

Support is a key part of the process. Most programs offer:

  • Advisors to guide you step by step through requirements
  • Field supervisors who observe and coach you in the classroom
  • Mentorship from experienced teachers at your school
  • Job support like interview tips, resume reviews, and district connections

You’re not on your own, you have a network of people dedicated to helping you succeed.

How do I qualify for an alt cert program?

Most states require:

  • A bachelor’s degree from an accredited university (any major)
  • A minimum GPA (usually around 2.0–2.5, depending on the state)
  • A clear background check
  • Passing scores on required exams (varied by state/subject)

Each state’s rules are a little different, but in general, if you have a degree and meet the state’s standards, you can qualify.
