It didn’t last long. A New York Court ruling has stopped alternative teacher certification by charter schools almost as quickly as it began.
The State University of New York system had established a program to help charter schools certify their own teachers to help alleviate chronic shortages. So they established an alternate route to the classroom.
The ruling was not based on the potential quality of these teachers but was based on current New York law that says that only the state education commissioner and Board of Regents can set teacher qualification standards.
Enrollment in New York educator preparation programs has dropped 34% in just 4 years so the problem is going to get worse. It is sad that even with the many studies on the effectiveness of alternative certification there is still this ongoing battle while students get taught by long term subs.
