Teachers work tirelessly dedicating their time, energy, and passion to shaping the minds of future generations. Their work extends beyond the classroom because they impart knowledge, instill values, inspire creativity, and foster a love for learning.

It is through teachers’ guidance and mentorship that students discover their potential and embark on the journey of lifelong learning.

We set aside a special time each year to honor and appreciate their contributions and recognize teachers’ impact on individuals and communities.

Teachers Appreciation Week is an occasion where educators are showered with gratitude and recognition for their invaluable service. It is celebrated across all states on the first full week of May.

In 2024, we celebrate Teachers Appreciation Week from May 6th to May 10th. It is a time for students, parents, administrators, and communities to come together and express their appreciation for educators’ dedication and hard work.

What Is Teacher Appreciation Week?

As a society, we have dedicated days or weeks to honor various professions and their contributions to our communities. Firefighters, nurses, and police officers all have their appreciation days as a way of expressing gratitude for the roles they play.

Teachers have an entire Teacher Appreciation Week.  This special week is a time to shower our educators with gratitude and appreciation for their hard work, dedication, and the positive impact they have on our lives.

The history of Teacher Appreciation Week dates back to the 1950s when a teacher named Mattye Whyte Woodridge began the movement to establish a national day to honor teachers.

In 1953, Eleanor Roosevelt persuaded Congress to set aside a day to recognize teachers. Back then, it was just a single day of recognition.  However, due to the overwhelming support for honoring teachers, the National Education Association (NEA) successfully lobbied to turn it into a full week in 1986.

Today, Teacher Appreciation Week is celebrated annually during the first full week of May, with Teacher Appreciation Day falling on the Tuesday of that week.

This year, in 2024, Teacher Appreciation Week is from May 6th to May 10th, with Teacher Appreciation Day falling on May 7th.

But why do teachers deserve an entire week of appreciation?

Teachers take on a tremendous responsibility, shaping the minds of our youth and preparing them for the future. Their patience, passion, and dedication have a lasting impact on countless students.

Teacher Appreciation Week has become more than just a gesture of gratitude. It is a wonderful tradition that has endured for more than 70 years.

How to Appreciate Teachers

Expressing appreciation for teachers’ hard work and dedication is a gesture of kindness and recognition of their invaluable contributions to society.

Teachers’ hard work deserves recognition, not just during Teacher Appreciation Week, but throughout the entire year.  However, the week provides the perfect opportunity to show them how much they are valued.

  • Serve breakfast or lunch: Organize a breakfast or lunch for teachers where students can serve food, help set up, and clean up afterward to give teachers a break and show appreciation for their hard work.
  • Create a memory book: Compile a memory book filled with photos, messages, and memories shared by students about their experiences with the teacher. This personalized gift will be cherished by the teacher for years to come.
  • Plan a teacher appreciation assembly: Coordinate with school administrators to organize a special assembly to honor teachers, where students can give speeches, perform musical or dance, and present awards.

Parents

As a parent, you should support your child’s education by building a positive relationship with their teachers.  Teacher Appreciation Week is a wonderful time to show appreciation for the teachers making a difference in your child’s life.

Here are a few ideas for parents:

  • Volunteer at the school: Teachers often have a lot on their plates, and your extra support will be greatly appreciated. Offer to help with classroom activities, administrative tasks, or school events.
  • Write a letter showing your support for your child’s favorite teacher: A heartfelt message from a parent can truly make a teacher’s day. Take a moment to write a letter or email to your child’s teacher expressing your gratitude for their hard work and dedication. Mention specific ways they’ve positively impacted your child’s learning or character development.
  • Post on social media: Show your support for your child’s teacher on social media platforms like Facebook or Instagram. Write a positive post about their teaching style, their impact on your child, or their dedication to the school community. Remember to tag the teacher and the school.
  • Decorate the classroom and celebrate teachers with all the students: Create a festive atmosphere to honor teachers and show appreciation from the entire school community.

Administrators, students, and parents should come together to celebrate the outstanding contributions of teachers during Teacher Appreciation in these ways.
